the one - interview with jason statham
Who is Jason Statham? A former high-diver and salesman, Jason made made his feature film debut in Guy Ritchie's critically acclaimed Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. He went on to star opposite Brad Pitt in Guy Ritchie's follow up movie Snatch and in the Action Drama Turn it Up. Jason's next release is John Carpenter's upcomming thriller, Ghost of Mars, and Jet's next film The One. He will also be in the upcoming film Mean Machine due out next year.
During production on The One we had a chance to meet with Jason and ask him 10 questions which our French GFN Webmasters Caroline and Elodie came up with.
jetli.com: Could you please tell us about your background as an actor?
Jason: Uh .. is that what I am? (laughs) I started out, I used to be like a street trader. I used to work on the markets, not the stock markets, but like what you'd call a flea market. But back home they're much more glamorous and they're much bigger and people come and spend money there like they would on the high street. So I used to do all that and work the corner selling jewelry out of a briefcase. We'd call it "fly-pitching" and there used to be a lot of street-corner con men. That's what I used to do for years.
And I used to be involved in a sport. I was high diving for the country for about 12 years. You know, like spring-board diving -- you do gymnastics from a platform and try to make as little splash as possible. So I mixed the two of them. One financed my living and lifestyle and the other was a hobby that I became quite dedicated at. I was on the British Team for 10 years and I used to travel the world. When I wasn't training I was working.
And that was my background training for being an "actor". All of a sudden I met with Guy Ritchie and he had written a script about this bunch of London Lads and one of them was this street corner con man and I was the authentic person to play it. You know, I had lived that lifestyle and I knew all about the dialogue that these people use, and so rather than use an actor he used the real thing. So that was my first attempt at acting. That was Lock Stock. And then I went on to do Snatch which was his second movie. And immediately after that I came out here to do John Carpenter's new movie Ghost of Mars. So I'm slowly learning and getting my experience first hand, if you like, without any training or whatever, and the more you do, the more you learn.
And the next thing you know I'm doing a movie with Jet!
jetli.com: How did you happen to be cast for The One?
Jason: Well, Steve Chasman is my manager and he obviously looks after Jet and he told me about the project and I met with Jim [Wong] and Glen [Morgan] before Christmas of last year and expressed my interest. Time passed and eventually they gave me the roll. I was really, really thrilled.
jetli.com: What kind of character do you have in The One?
Jason: Well, I play a multiverse agent. I team up with Delroy Lindo who's more of a cop. And I'm more of a soldier from a universe that's pretty chaotic. I'm more of a soldier that's brought in. We come from an establishment where they recruit only the best of the best to be a multiverse agent so we're supposed to be very capable of dealing with people like the Bad Jet, Yulaw. Although we haven't seen anyone as bad as him, so our forces are not as good as they should be. He's probably the worst we've ever met by a long, long way. So I play one of these guys that restricts people from traveling from different universes and we keep control on the bad guys.
jetli.com: What is the most challenging aspect of this movie?
Jason: I was going to say to fight Jet Li (laughs) but they've come under various pressures from time restrictions and various things so they've had to slice down what I was going to be doing, which is very unfortunate because I was looking forward to it, because I did a fair amount of martial arts myself. I did kick boxing and different stuff, but you know, not close to being in the same league as some of the present company. But I did a bit so I've got a bit more experience than the regular actor, and I've been involved in a sport for years so I'm quite a physical guy. It's a shame that none of that stuff's going ot be in (laughs). I suppose the most challenging thing would be doing an American accent which I'm doing in this film.
jetli.com: How was it to work with Jet?
Jason: Well, he's a pain in the ass (laughs). Actually, he's the best fun, really. He's always messing around and cracking jokes and he's got a gret sense of humor, which a lot of people fail to keep these days. Especially big stars. You meet them and some of them are very serious ... I've met a few of them recently. But he's great. With all his talents, and I'm a big fan of martial arts and I know about his capabilities, so to be in the company of him is like a little dream come true. I've seen a lot of his movies and the next thing you know I'm doing scenes with him and, you know, it's great.
jetli.com: Had you ever seen Hong Kong movies before?
jason: Well, name some and I'll tell you if I've seen them.
jetli.com: Fist of Legend, Once Upon a Time in China ....
jason: Yes! Fist of Legend. Of course, that's one of my favorites. I love that one.
jetli.com: Fong Sai Yuk ...
jason: No.
jetli.com: Actually, Corey Yuen directed that movie too.
jason: Did he really? He's a great sort. He's a bit of a legend himself, you know, so it's great to be in the company of all these blokes.
jetli.com: The One is a science fiction movie. Do you think that Jet's background in Hong Kong movies is a good blend with Hollywood science fiction?
jason: I think it's a winning combination. You know the stuff that he's physically capable of doing, the charm and the charisma that he's got. Combined with all the special effects it's the only way forward. I think it's a fantastic combination to take both those attributes and blend them in and make something that is appealing as it's going to be. It's great.
jetli.com: How was the experience working with Corey Yuen and his crew?
jason: Yeah! They're great! We did a few rehearsals in the fist week and I was totally out of shape. I had a twisted neck and a sprained knee ?you know, they really put me through the paces. To me it's a very balletic kind of choreography that they do. You know it's not just like .. I'm used to like street brawling and punching a bag until you're black and blue, and this is much more graceful and much more stylized way of fighting. It stands out. I was watching some of the stuff at the factory and it's very poetic in a way that it's choreographed. It's fantastic. You know they are the best of the best and it's great to be with them.
jetli.com: Snatch was a very brilliant comedy, you recently worked with John Carpenter on Ghost of Mars, and now you're doing The One, are you willing to keep experimenting with different genres in the future or do you have a preference for one particular type of movie?
jason: Well, you know, I've got an open mind when it comes to cinema. I love comedies, I love great dramas, thrillers, ... I love them all. As long as the role is good and they want me in it (laughs) -- that's the second thing. First things first; if the script is good and it interests you and you think you can do something then why not go ahead? Not just because its in a particular genre but also because you like the material. I think that's the first and foremost point of me doing anything. I've got to be keen and interested and enthusiastic to try something.
jetli.com: Do you have anything else lined up?
jason: Well, I'll go home straight back after this and they're doing a re-make of the old Burt Reynolds film, The Longest Yard. You know it's about the American Footballer who goes to prison and he rounds up the cons to play the prison guards. So we're doing an English remake of that.
jetli.com: With rugby?
jason: No it's, as you say, "soccer"
jetli.com: Ah, the "real" football.
jason: Yeah, it's what we call football. It's set in an English prison, and I've got a roll in that. I'm working with Vinnie Jones who is a friend of mine who I've worked with two movies on with now, Matthew Vaughn is the producer who produced Snatch and Lock Stock. It's like a little family getting back together and doing a little English movie, and soccer is a big thing back home. We'll see how well it does, but I can guarantee you we'll have some fun making it.
