rise to honor - scea 2003 e3 press conference
Tuesday morning, May 13, 2003, jetli.com was able to attend Sony Computer Entertainment America's (SCEA) press conference, held the day before E3, the largest electronics and entertainment expo in the world. During the press conference SCEA announced it's upcoming plans, future game releases and game console innovations, but most importantly they presented information on Jet's upcoming video game release Rise to Honor.
They main speaker for the press conference was SCEA's president, Kaz Hirai. Other key note speakers included Sony President Ken Kutaragi, the President and Chief Operating Officer of EA Sports, as well as a special guest appearance by Tiger Woods and Cedric the Entertainer.
The press conference was held, coincidentally enough, at the same facility that the parking garage fight and several other key scenes from The One were filmed. Sony really decked out the studio facility with large monitors and video screens and easily 200 members of the press were in attendance.
Mr. Hirai started off discussing SCEA's past performance as well as the performance of the Play Station and Play Station 2 (PS2) in the gaming arena. Among the highlights were the PS2's impressive sales numbers and the over 500 titles that are currently available for the PS2. He then touched on SCEA's future plans and approaches to continued presence in the gaming console market.
First he talked about the "content", or the games themselves. After touching lightly on some of the past PS2 hit titles (such as "Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty", "Final Fantasy X", "Grand Theft Auto" and "Kingdom Hearts") they announced new upcomming titles which would be available exclusively on the PS2. Among them was "Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater" (to be released in 2004), the next "Grand Theft Auto" game, and "Gran Tourismo 4".
Kazunori Yamauchi, the president of Polyphony Digital, the company that produced the "Gran Tourismo" series came out to speak on the next GT game and showed a video highlighting some of the lengths they went to in order to achieve as realistic a racing experience as possible. They also showed some incredibly impressive shots of the game.
Of course, the event we were waiting for was a presentation on Jet Li's upcoming game title "Rise to Honor". Mr. Hirai spoke at length about Jet's involvement in the development process and then showed a short video which talks about some of the effort that went in to producing the game. After discussing new games they went on to discuss a new SKU (packaging release) for the Playstation 2. This next release will include built-in online and network capabilities, will play many formats of DVDs, including DVD-Rs CD-Rs, Audio Files, and will include a built-in IR port for a remote control, as well as several other new features. The new release will have a Manufactured Suggested Retail (MSR) price of $199.00.
He also discussed some of the new peripherals that would be released including the Interractive headset that allows users to talk to each other while playing games in different parts of the country as well as the Eye-Toy, which is basially a webcam on steroids. Not only does it capture your picture and include you in the game, but it allows you to move and interract with the game itself. The producer for the Eye-Toy gave a demonstration where he interracted with the environment in the game while he was a part of the game itself.
The president of Electronic Arts then came out and demonstrated 6 sport-related titles being played live with different people in different parts of the country. Each person demonstrating the game in the room was playing live with another person in another part of the country. The final game of the 6 was "Tiger Woods Golf" and none-other than Tiger Woods himself was playing live from Orlando, Florida via teleconferencing. His opponent in the studio was Cedric the Entertainer who managed to beat Tiger on the 18th hole with 3 strokes to the hole.
The final presentation was by Sony president, Ken Kutaragi, who introduced Sony's foray into the hand-held gaming market. Called the PSP (Play Station Portable), this handheld device utilizes a 2.4 cm UMD (Universal Media Disk) that holds up to 1.8 Gigabytes (GB) of information. With 3D polygonal technology, 3D stereo sound, and 480x272 pixel 4.5 inch backlighted screen, gameplay should be quite impressive. In addition it utilizes embedded DRAM and 90nm semicondoctor technology (half the size of the Play Station), a rechargeable built-in battery and has compatability with both USB 2.0 and memorystick devices. Mr. Kutaragi dubbed it the "Walkman for the 21st Century".
On that note the press conference ended. The next report will be on E3 itself with an upcoming exclusive video interview with the producer for "Rise to Honor", Jim Wallace!
