Who is Glen Morgan? Glen Morgan has been working in the television and film industries for over a decade. He has worked as both writer and producer on such television shows as The X-Files, Space, Above and Beyond, Millenium and The Commish. He has also writen for such shows as 21-Jump Street, Booker and The Others. His film credits include writing the screenplay (along with long-time collaborator James Wong) for Final Destination and The One. He also served as producer for both films.
During production on The One we had a chance to ask Glen a couple questions about the utilization of the traditional Chinese martial art, Bagua Zhang in the fight sequences.
Q: Could you talk a bit about why you integrated bagua zhang in to this movie, or how the character in this movie utilizes bagua zhang?
Glen: "Well, for Gabe's character, which we've been calling "Good Jet", bagua zhang is a meditation -- it's something that his grandfather had taught him. And as the movie goes on, his wife is a part of that circle that makes him whole, the bagua form being circular in nature.
That circle is appropriate for Gabe's character, as opposed to the bad guy, Yulaw, who uses Hsing Yi, a very linear style. Bad Jet's character has got a lot of drive to kill all the other selves that exist in the parallel universes."
Q: Who's idea was it to integrate classical Chinese martial arts into the movie?
Glen: "Well, I don't know specifically, but it was Corey Yuen and Jet that brought it up. It was important to them. You know ... it's the gemini ... in the action sequences. You don't just stop and fight or whatever. Within the action you're developing the characters, so when good Jet goes to meet Bad Jet, Good Jet gets angry and is fighting with closed fists and sort of mimicking Bad Jet's style, but Bad Jet is still beating him.
It's not until Good Jet sees his wedding ring and recalls his wife and what she means to him ... how she's a part of his circle ... that he puts his hands up and opens his palms, avoiding Bad Jet's attacks.
