romeo must die - premiere
Posted: April 2000
This past Monday was a long-awaited, hectic, and thrilling day for Jet Li, as his new movie Romeo Must Die made its worldwide premiere. The adventure kicked off at 7:30 am, when Jet was piloted from his home to the Power 106 Radio Station for a live interview hosted by deejay Big Boy and starring his fellow co-actors Aaliyah and Isaiah Washington.
At 4 pm in the afternoon, Jet arrived at NBC studios in Burbank to participate in a live taping of the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, which was to be aired later in the evening. Having done a guest appearance with Jay Leno two years ago to introduce himself as the martial arts villain of Lethal Weapon 4, Jet was back again that afternoon for his latest Warner Bros. outing.
During the taping, Jet chatted to Jay Leno about his learning English and showed off some of the slang he'd picked up since he last appeared on the show. Among his favorite slang phrases was the one broached to him by his Lethal Weapon 4 co-star, comedian Chris Rock: "Jet, you are da BOMB!" Jet also did a rendition of "What's up?" over an imaginary phone. In addition, he explained he was a "traditional Chinese man" who was naturally bashful around women. In fact, as a testament to his reserve with the opposite sex, Jet told Jay that after Aaliyah kissed him on the cheek, he developed an allergic reaction to the lipstick on her lips.
Later on, Jay ran an action clip of Romeo Must Die to audiences, wherein Jet battled his foes at a warehouse using a matrix whirlwind kick, a fire hose, and other moves. Comedian Molly Shannon, who was also a guest at the show, remarked on Jet's physical prowess. Finally, Jet mentioned a potential movie idea he has about "kung-fu dancing," in which the main character transforms from meek pushover to martial arts practitioner the minute he dons his headphones and gets with the dance beat. Much to the delight of studio audience members, Jet jiggled a dance move onstage interlaced with martial arts.
And finally, the big event of the night -- the premiere in Westwood. The movie was to be premiered in two theaters facing one another across the Broxton-Weyburn intersection. Two to three hours before the premiere officially kicked off, fans trickled onto the street lined with eateries and queued up in two separate lines. Those who had already gotten tickets from Power 106 or from some other source lounged on the sidewalk and chatted to their friends. Those without tickets raked across the scene, hoping to "scavenger" an extra ticket or two from passersby or from Warner Bros. executives stationed around the theater. Security guards commenced their shifts about the congested street.
6 pm -- the street was packed, with lines of fans snaked around corners and past entire blocks. Spotlights were set up; news crews, reporters, and photographers deployed themselves strategically about the red carpet. Everyone was eager to witness the public birth of the long-awaited, highly-anticipated hit film. Most fans were college students, a diverse ethnic make-up consisting mainly of African-American and Asian-American teenagers. As fans waited in line, they speculated on the action scenes, on Jet, and on which stars would be arriving on the red carpet. Several fans prepared their cameras in hopes of catching Jet or any of the stars on film.
7:30 pm -- Jet finally arrived via his limousine in a Kenzo suit. All smiles, he greeted reporters, papparazzi, and photographers. He strolled back and forth across the red carpet several times to let fan members and reporters to take pictures. Also present were his co-stars Aaliyah and Russell Wong. Some of the other stars present included Keanu Reeves, Magic Johnson, Babyface, and Shannon Lee and her mother.
The premiere went off quite well, and after its end Jet attended a post-premiere party where he was served Californian cuisine. All the cast members were present at the party. Jet enjoyed himself and didnt leave until around 11 pm in the evening.
