hero - l.a. premiere
August 17, 2004

We were invited to attend the premiere of Zhang Yi Mou's Hero in Los Angeles on August 17, 2004 at the Arc Light Theater in Hollywood. The movie was scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. with the Red Carpet treatment starting around 7:30 p.m. We showed up around 7:00 p.m. and got ready to see the famous people show up.

First of all, I have good news and bad news.

First the bad news: Since Jet was gracious enough to take his time with each reporter on the red carpet (I think other celebrities actually passed by him in line) there was no opportunity to take pictures of him before the film started. After the film he went to the after-reception at the Arc Light Lounge but unfortunately he was constantly surrounded by friends and fans and no pictures were able to be taken (well, unless you like pictures of the back of his head). So the bad news is ... No good pictures of Jet (which is ironic, this being his official website).

The good news: We took a ton of pictures of OTHER celebrities which you can see by clicking on the gallery link above. But wait! This report of the event isn't done yet! Be sure to finish reading this before going off and looking at pictures and videos.

So, it turned out that Jet was running a little late from the hotel. It was close to 7:20 when his car finally arrived and he made his way through the autograph hounds and hand-shakers. (They sequester all these autograph seekers in their own little gated community and the celebrity walks over to them and signs some autographs if there is time. It's sort of like watching feeding time in the monkey cage at the zoo.)

Next Jet made his way down the Red Carpet talking to press, having his picture taken, (which you can see a few of with a quick search of Google. I'll post links to them at the end of this article.) and being the nice guy that he is. He took his time with each person making sure to give everyone equal opportunity to talk with him about Hero and his work.

After Jet showed up Donnie Yen was next. Fortunately I happened to be walking out from the garage at the same time he showed up so I got a few good close-ups of him. After Donnie was Zhang Zi Yi, then Quentin Tarrantino, etc. It turns out that other celebrties like Rick Yune and Sophia Copola were there as well.

Everyone was rushed inside around 8:00 p.m. so we all got our complimentary popcorn and sodas and made our way in to the theater. A few minutes later the celebrities made their way in too. Jet was nice enough to walk down the aisle that was reserved for folks on his guest list and shake hands and greet us. He sat about 10 seats to our right, Zhang Zi Yi was sitting off to our right and Quentin Tarrantino was two rows behind us.

The movie started and, not to be totally biased, but the film is much better on a big screen. Definitely the way to see the film. For all of you who have watched the DVD or VCD of this movie, I recommend a visit to the theater to see it in all it's multi-colored glory. Gives a whole new feeling to the film.

Concerning the film itself, it is the same version that was released in Asia, although they did change a few of the subtitles. The most glaring example of this was "Tian Shang" changing from "Under Heaven" to "Our Land". Not quite the same thing if you understand what "Tian Shang" means, but if you don't then it probably won't make that much of a difference.

After the movie we made our way out. Jet and the other celebrities were making their way to the Arc Light Cafe upstairs in the main lobby for the reception. Jet took his time going there to shake hands with friends and greet various fans. Once the group got to the main reception area the entrance area clogged up with people so, leaving Jet and his group, we made our way over to the other side of the room.

Fortunately that happened to be the side of the room where Zhang Zi Yi and Donnie Yen were hanging out. I managed to get several pictures of them and a video clip of Zhang Zi Yi as well. After a while the party starting mellowing out and most of the celebrities took off for their respective destinations. Beaver, Jet's previous assistant, wasn't able to attend the premiere, so I made arrangements to meet up with him later for some food in Koreatown.

All-in-all the night was great. Not all that much Jet-action (socially at least) but plenty of other celebrities were there to make up for it.
